Presented by UAA Biologist, Dr. Brandon Briggs

Birth of Planet Earth tells the twisted tale of our planet’s origins.

Scientists now believe that our galaxy is filled with solar systems, including up to a billion planets roughly the size of our own. The film employs advanced, data-driven, cinematic-quality visualizations to explore some of the greatest questions in science today: How did Earth become a living planet in the wake of our solar system’s violent birth? What does its history tell us about our chances of finding other worlds that are truly Earth-like?

Brandon R. Briggs is an Associate Professor in Biological Sciences at the University of Alaska Anchorage. B.S. in Biology (2003), Idaho State University; M.S. in Microbiology (2007), Idaho State University; Ph.D. in Oceanography (2011), Oregon State University. He was a C-DEBI Postdoctoral Fellow at Miami University (2011-2015). His research group is highly interdisciplinary and has both a geomicrobiology and applied microbiology focus. The group uses a variety of molecular, physiological, microscopic, and bioinformatic techniques to characterize microbes from extreme environments and use those microbes for biotechnological applications. Currently, Dr. Briggs has projects on the International Space Station to determine metabolic enhancements for biofuel production, and recently has been funded by two NSF grants to work in Antarctica. He is also the Core Director for the NIH-COBRE funded Advanced Instrumentation in Microbiome Studies (AIMS) core facility.

"Birth of Planet Earth" is one hour in length, featuring a followed by a presentation from a scientist or researcher in the field. Ticket reservations are available online only. Remaining tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis at the door on the day of the show. The planetarium will open for seating 30 minutes before the start of each show.
