Jazz Ensemble: A Tribute to Charles Mingus

UAA Performing Arts
UAA Recital Hall
Saturday, Oct 22, 2022 at 7:30 PM (AK)

UAA Jazz Ensemble and friends will present a concert of music by a legendary band leader, Charles Mingus (1922-1979). Mingus was one of the most important figures in twentieth century American music. He was a virtuoso bass player, accomplished pianist, bandleader, and composer. A major proponent of collective improvisation, he is considered to be one of the greatest jazz musicians and composers in history, with a career spanning three decades and collaborations with other jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Herbie Hancock.

Charles Mingus never hesitated to speak out on important social issues. His interest in freedom, equality, love and peace, while acknowledging the existence of subservience, prejudice, hate and fear account for the great emotional scope of his music.

Since this year marks 100 years of Mingus, the program will feature some of his most famous works: Goodbye Pork Pie Hat (an elegy to the great tenor saxophonist Lester Young), Fables of Faubus (a protest against segregationist Arkansas governor Orval Faubus), Haitian Fight Song (inspired by the battle for freedom of Haitian slaves in the 18th century), Boogie Stop Shuffle, Moanin’, and many other pieces.

The UAA Fine Arts Box Office accepts credit cards only for ticket purchases, both online and at the physical box office in the Fine Arts Building.
